In India circa after the British Rule, there is a princely family consisting of Bade Thakur (Shammi Kapoor), his sons Devan (Vijayendra Ghatge), Vikram Singh (Vinod Khanna), and a third son who is a Police Officer (Mohsin Khan). Devan is threatened by the changes taking place in India, and the gradual erosion of power by princely families and zamindars. His brothers, on the contrary, accept the change. Vikram even has a lowly peasant, Sumer Singh (Dharmendra) for a friend. But fate has something else in store for these two friends. Things come to such a boil that eventually Bade Thakur may have to decide to split the estate. How will this effect the relationships of the father and the sons? Will this impact on the friendship of Sumer and Vikram?

朱眉眉在话剧团里当演员，跟导演吕莎相恋：吕莎是有妇之夫，更有一子学诚，两人的关系受到很大压力。眉眉怀了吕莎的骨肉，因为不想拿掉孩子，决定放弃如日方中的事业，跟吕莎一同离开上海，开始新生活。眉眉诞下女婴，取名海燕，整天在家里照顾女儿，吕莎又找不到工作，生活越来越差，一时冲动，向眉眉提出分手。眉眉既痛心又后悔，得旧友允诺帮助她重回上海发展，于是带同女儿离开吕莎，并退还当日私奔时吕莎送给她的金鸡心。吕莎大受打击，欲跟妻子修好。但遭拒绝，最后吞下金鸡心自杀身亡。海燕长大后，跟父母一样热爱音乐，并结识了志趣相投的学诚。二人共堕爱河，却不知彼此为同父异母兄妹，海燕更不理眉眉的反对，与学诚定下婚约。眉眉刺激过度，当场晕倒。海燕好友王代为道出上一代的复杂关系，惜眉眉已返魂无术，临终前劝告海燕和学诚，切勿重蹈覆辙，因感情用事，以致终生后悔。

故事发生在上海的一家下等客栈“闻家店”里。店里住着形形色色的下层社会人物：落魄的富家子弟金不换、三次守寡的馒头张、忠厚而糊涂的警察石敢当、终日辛劳却债台高筑的赖皮匠、报童牛三、卖药的全老头、年轻豪爽而心高气傲的小偷杨七郎……各色各样的人人聚集在一起会发生什么呢？
